Nicole Robichaud, a lawyer and caregiver in Ottawa, shared her touching experience with a longstanding family tradition involving a folk art calendar. This special calendar, a recurring Christmas gift for her mother over the past three decades, holds sentimental value in their family.
Growing up in Toronto, the holiday season was always a joyous time for the Robichaud family. Despite being surrounded by festive decorations and gifts, Nicole’s mother cherished the art calendar above all. Each year, she would admire the vibrant paintings, particularly enjoying the snowy scenes depicted for December.
In 2015, at the age of 68, Nicole’s mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Despite the challenges that came with the progressive illness, she remained positive and resilient, drawing from her past experience supporting her own father through a similar journey with Alzheimer’s.
Over the years, as the disease advanced, Nicole’s parents relocated to a retirement home in Ottawa, where her mother eventually transitioned to the memory care floor and later to a smaller suite. Despite her declining health and cognitive abilities, the folk art calendar remained a constant presence in her life.
As Nicole witnessed her mother’s cognitive decline and diminishing connection with the calendar, she continued to order the annual gift each Christmas. Even though her mother could no longer engage with the pictures or express her appreciation, Nicole found purpose in sharing the tradition with her.
