Iranian Runner Finds Freedom and Fulfillment in Canadian Community

Ladan Jahankha finds fulfillment in being a part of her local running community, which transcends a mere hobby for her – it represents the realization of a long-held aspiration. Having relocated to St. John’s in 2022 from Iran, a country where women’s involvement in sports is significantly restricted, Jahankha expresses profound gratitude for the newfound opportunities she now enjoys. The Center for Human Rights in Iran highlights the stringent dress codes imposed on Iranian female athletes for public sports events, along with the government’s limitations on women’s participation in various sporting activities.

Recent reports by the BBC revealed the arrests of two marathon organizers for permitting women without hijabs to take part in events. Recounting her past attempts at running in Tehran during her twenties, Jahankha shares how societal constraints prevented her from pursuing her passion at that time. Now settled in St. John’s and working as a teacher, Jahankha reignited her interest in running after connecting with a colleague who shared her enthusiasm for the sport.

Through social media, Jahankha discovered a community of runners, where she found a coach and joined a group tailored for beginners. Expressing her appreciation for the supportive environment within the group, she credits her coach and fellow runners for their encouragement. Amid ongoing tensions stemming from the U.S.-Iran conflict, Jahankha emphasizes how running has become a vital outlet for managing stress and anxiety in her life.

Participating in a Pride race alongside her husband and daughter last month, Jahankha is gearing up for another 5-kilometer race scheduled for August 16. Reflecting on the opportunities afforded to her in Canada compared to the constraints she faced in Iran, Jahankha expresses profound gratitude for the freedom and possibilities she now embraces.
