The Tragically Hip guitarist Paul Langlois revealed in a recent interview that he is still coming to terms with the band’s final concert in Kingston, Ont., which took place a decade ago. Reflecting on the emotional night, Langlois expressed gratitude for the impact the band’s music had on fans.
The farewell show, where lead singer Gord Downie bid adieu to the audience, was a poignant moment for both the band and its supporters. Downie, who had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in 2015 and passed away in 2017, delivered a heartfelt performance that resonated with millions of viewers.
Despite initial concerns about Downie’s health affecting his performance, the band members were amazed by his physical strength and emotional presence during the tour. Langlois and fellow guitarist Rob Baker admitted that they underestimated the significance of the final show until after the event, realizing the profound impact it had on Canadians.
While the band has no plans for a reunion, they recently released a new album titled “Live July 22 – August 20, 2016,” featuring recordings from their last tour. Baker acknowledged the healing power of music, recounting a personal moment of emotional release triggered by a conversation with Downie about grief and the therapeutic role of music in processing difficult emotions.
