Thousands of individuals awaited assistance on Flores Island in Indonesia as they continued to grapple with the aftermath of a recent strong earthquake that caused significant destruction. The seismic event resulted in a death toll of at least 68 people, leaving over 200 individuals injured and numerous homes and structures damaged. Many residents in East Nusa Tenggara province spent the day grieving for the victims and hoping for aid to reach communities that were still isolated due to the earthquake’s impact.
The devastation caused by the earthquake was evident through collapsed buildings, shattered homes, and blocked roads filled with debris like trees and boulders. Residents, such as Rasyid Jafar, a local clothing trader in the severely affected village of Reo, expressed urgent needs for essential supplies like food, medicine, and clean water.
President Prabowo Subianto acknowledged the disaster during Indonesia’s Independence Day ceremony in Jakarta, urging prayers for those affected by the earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara and other affected regions. The National Disaster Management Agency reported significant damage, including over 4,500 homes affected, 122 health facilities damaged, and numerous schools and places of worship impacted.
The province faced a state of emergency declared by the governor for 14 days following the earthquake. Rescue efforts continued as aftershocks persisted, with approximately 1,576 aftershocks recorded, some of which were felt by local residents. The deployment of military and police personnel, along with the establishment of emergency field hospitals, aimed to provide critical aid to the affected communities.
Aid workers managed to reach remote areas like Palue Island, close to the earthquake’s epicenter, after facing challenging terrain and landslides. The journey to provide assistance was perilous, with obstacles like blocked roads and steep terrains hindering relief efforts. Indonesia’s geographical location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” makes it prone to seismic activities, including earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
