Skate Canada made an official announcement on Wednesday regarding the departure of Mike Slipchuk as the high-performance director at the end of the 2026-27 season, culminating his two-decade tenure in the position. Slipchuk became a part of Skate Canada in 2006 and during his leadership tenure, Canadian figure skaters achieved notable success with a total of 10 Olympic and 24 world championship medals.
The 2018 Pyeongchang Games marked a significant milestone for Canada under Slipchuk’s guidance, securing four Olympic medals, including gold in the ice dance category by Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, as well as in the team event. Virtue and Moir’s gold medals at the Olympics established them as the most decorated figure skaters in Olympic history, with three gold and two silver medals.
While the recent Olympic performances have been less triumphant, with no medals at the Beijing Games in 2022 and a lone bronze by Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier in ice dance at Milan Cortina earlier this year, Canada has consistently produced world champions across various disciplines in the past two decades. Notable achievements include Patrick Chan’s three consecutive men’s world titles from 2011-13 and Virtue and Moir’s three gold medals.
The most recent world champions from Canada were pairs skaters Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps in 2024. Following his retirement as high-performance director, Slipchuk will continue to support Skate Canada in an advisory capacity to facilitate the transition to a new high-performance director.
