SpaceX successfully launched its massive Starship into orbit for the first time on Monday, delivering the most advanced Starlink satellites to date before ending the flight prematurely with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean after three hours. Originally targeting a 10-hour flight encompassing six orbits around Earth to demonstrate readiness for NASA’s Artemis moon program, SpaceX faced a setback when one engine shut down prematurely after liftoff. Despite this, flight controllers, with the malfunctioning engine deemed unnecessary, opted to proceed with the mission.
The launch marked a milestone for founder Elon Musk’s flagship rocket, which carried 26 cutting-edge Starlink satellites to augment the existing fleet of 11,000 units providing internet services. The spacecraft released the satellites one by one, eliciting cheers from onlookers at the Starbase launch site in Texas. The decision to cut the mission short was made shortly after the satellite deployment, although no specific reason was provided.
This mission marked the 14th full-scale launch of Starship from Texas in three years, surpassing previous test flights that only reached the Indian Ocean. SpaceX had planned for Starship to complete six orbits at an altitude of 275 kilometers over nearly 10 hours before splashing down in the Pacific near Chile. However, the flight was curtailed after just a couple of orbits to ensure safety.
The primary booster was not intended to return to the launch site, instead landing in the Gulf of Mexico shortly after liftoff. Musk emphasized the importance of caution to avoid endangering people with falling debris, highlighting a past incident in 2025 where a Starship explosion necessitated flight diversions over the Caribbean.
Depending on the outcome of this orbital debut, SpaceX aims to recover the next Starship using mechanical arms for a potential relaunch later this year or early next year. The 124-meter rocket is designed for full reusability to reduce launch costs, with the last Starship successfully salvaged from the Indian Ocean in July. SpaceX engineers have made modifications based on the recovered spacecraft’s condition, with plans to certify Starship for orbital flights crucial for future missions to the moon and Mars.
The upcoming Artemis III mission involving multiple spacecraft docking maneuvers in orbit is set for next summer, with SpaceX’s Starship playing a pivotal role in future lunar landings. Musk’s vision for Starship extends beyond Mars, with immediate plans focusing on lunar missions and satellite launches to eventually replace the Falcon 9 rocket. Additional launch sites for Starship are under development in Florida and Louisiana to support future space endeavors.
