U.S. CIA Director John Ratcliffe engaged in discussions with Russian intelligence officials while in Moscow, as confirmed by the Kremlin on Wednesday. President Vladimir Putin did not meet with Ratcliffe during the visit, which was characterized by U.S. President Donald Trump as “semi-routine.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov informed the press that Putin had been briefed on the outcomes of the visit that occurred amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the stalemate in U.S.-Iran peace talks. Peskov refrained from disclosing the specific topics discussed during the meetings.
“There have been communications through security channels. I can confirm that there were no direct meetings with the Russian president. President Putin is regularly kept updated on all developments,” Peskov stated.
Although Trump did not explicitly state the purpose of Ratcliffe’s trip to Moscow during a radio interview, he expressed optimism about its potential outcomes, particularly in relation to resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
The previous visit by a U.S. CIA director to Moscow occurred in November 2021 when Ratcliffe’s predecessor, William Burns, held discussions with Putin. Peskov acknowledged the importance of intelligence agency interactions between the U.S. and Russia, suggesting that such exchanges could have a positive impact on bilateral relations.
“While these contacts persist even during challenging times in our relations, it is premature to predict the extent to which they will contribute to improving the current crisis in our bilateral ties,” Peskov remarked.
