“Canadian Space Tech Innovation Targets Blood Clots in Space”

On October 1, Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut Joshua Kutyrk is scheduled to launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, equipped with advanced Canadian technology. Living and working in space poses significant risks due to the human body’s inability to adapt to low gravity, leading to various health issues, including the formation of dangerous blood clots.

NASA has been actively researching the effects of long-duration space travel on the human body. Concerns about blood clot formation prompted NASA to seek innovative solutions to assess and mitigate this risk for astronauts aboard the space station. To address this, NASA collaborated with Vancouver-based company Response Biomedical to develop technology that can measure D-dimer levels in the blood, a crucial indicator of clot formation.

The technology, known as Acute Care Testing in Space (ACTIS), is derived from Response Biomedical’s existing RAMP technology. In addition to detecting blood clots, ACTIS can also screen for heart attacks, COVID-19, RSV, and other conditions, making it a versatile tool for space health monitoring. The quick and efficient blood test provided by ACTIS can deliver results within minutes, enhancing the effectiveness of medical evaluations for astronauts in space.

The significance of this technology extends beyond space exploration, as it can also benefit remote communities on Earth where rapid and reliable medical testing is essential. Response Biomedical aims to continue advancing portable testing capabilities to provide timely healthcare solutions globally, emphasizing the importance of accessibility and efficiency in medical diagnostics.

The successful integration of ACTIS into the International Space Station represents a significant achievement for Canada’s contribution to space technology. This collaboration not only underscores the adaptability and value of Canadian innovation but also highlights the country’s role in advancing healthcare solutions for space missions and beyond.
