“Mystery Surrounds Dozens of Dead Canada Geese in Manitoba Ditch”

Manitoba Conservation is currently conducting an investigation following the discovery of a cluster of deceased Canada geese in a roadside ditch just north of Garson, Man., on Friday morning by a grader operator. Scott Peluk, employed by the Rural Municipality of Brokenhead, encountered approximately 15 to 20 goose carcasses while grading the road near Road 33 E. north of Garson. Peluk described the scene as intact bodies of geese, not showing signs of being gutted or stripped for meat.

Without leaving his grader, Peluk observed some geese with apparent blood stains. While the exact cause of death remains unconfirmed, Peluk speculated that the geese might have exceeded the legal hunting limit for a single day, leading the hunters to dispose of the excess to avoid penalties. According to Manitoba’s 2026 hunting guide, licensed hunters within game bird hunting zones are permitted to harvest up to eight Canada geese per day and hold a maximum of 24 in their possession.

As a lifelong resident of the countryside, Peluk expressed disapproval of wasting edible meat and emphasized the importance of utilizing all parts of the hunted animals. To raise awareness, he captured a photo of the carcasses and shared it on social media, hoping that those responsible would be held accountable or refrain from such actions in the future. Peluk stressed the value of not wasting resources, especially in a time when food costs are high, suggesting that any surplus meat should be shared with others in need.

Manitoba Conservation has since retrieved the goose carcasses, and in response to inquiries from CBC News, confirmed being informed of the incident and initiating an investigation into the matter.
