A man from Ontario faced animal cruelty charges in a Las Vegas court for grabbing a flamingo named Peachy from a famous hotel’s habitat during a drunken incident. Mitchell Fairbarn, accused of injuring the flamingo in March, pleaded not guilty. After a trial, he was convicted of felony and misdemeanor animal cruelty charges and awaits sentencing in December, facing potential prison time.
Fairbarn, described as a contractor from rural Ontario, shared in court that he consumed “30 to 40” beers on the day of the incident during a work trip to Las Vegas. He entered the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel and Casino’s habitat and took the bird, thinking it would be a humorous prank.
Video evidence presented during the trial showed Fairbarn handling the flamingo in an elevator and hotel hallway. The bird was later found shaking and bleeding by a hotel employee. The veterinarian testified to the flamingo’s injuries, including missing feathers and blood loss, requiring medical treatment for recovery.
Fairbarn’s lawyer acknowledged his client’s regrettable actions while intoxicated, emphasizing no intention to harm the bird. The court proceedings revealed Fairbarn’s remorse and acknowledgment of his poor decisions. Despite the incident, Peachy has since recovered, and Caesars Entertainment expressed gratitude for the professional response to the matter, emphasizing continued care for the wildlife habitat’s animals.
Animal rights advocates praised the legal outcome and hoped it would deter future animal mistreatment incidents in Nevada. The case highlighted a series of recent animal cruelty incidents at Las Vegas casinos, underscoring the importance of protecting animals in such environments.
