Business leaders express relief as Alberta votes to remain part of Canada, citing increased investor certainty and positive economic impact. Calgary Chamber of Commerce President Deborah Yedlin describes the decision as a significant relief, emphasizing the potential benefits for the economy at both the provincial and national levels.
During the recent referendum, Albertans were asked to vote on various questions, including whether the province should stay in Canada or pursue a binding separation referendum. Initial results indicate a strong lead for remaining in Canada, with 75.5% support based on 1.8 million votes counted.
Despite economic challenges within the province, some advocating for separation argued that Alberta could better leverage its resources independently. However, many business leaders supported staying in Canada, warning that a “yes” vote for separation could prolong uncertainty and deter potential investors.
A poll conducted among Calgary Chamber of Commerce members revealed that nearly half were willing to relocate their businesses if Alberta pursued separation. Additionally, 60% expressed concerns about the negative impact of separatism on their businesses.
The referendum outcome comes amidst global economic uncertainty and strained trade relations. Avik Dey, CEO of Capital Power, acknowledges that the separation question caused some investor anxiety but believes that uncertainty has now dissipated post-vote.
Looking ahead, Charles St-Arnaud, chief economist at Servus Credit Union, anticip a return to normalcy for investors. However, separatist sentiments persist, with a quarter still supporting a binding vote on separation. St-Arnaud highlights the potential ongoing impact on businesses and policymaking.
Canadian Chamber of Commerce President Candace Laing stresses the importance of addressing separatist concerns to foster a resilient and united Canadian economy. With the majority choosing to stay in Canada, Laing is optimistic that the result will instill confidence among business leaders and investors, signaling a forward movement towards unity and strength.
