“Overland Flood Watch Issued for SW Manitoba Amid Heavy Rainfall Forecast”

An overland flood watch has been issued for portions of southwestern Manitoba due to heavy rainfall anticipated to persist from Friday into Saturday. The province’s hydrologic forecast center announced the watch, projecting widespread rainfall amounts of 20 to 40 millimeters for much of southwestern Manitoba, with an extension northward toward the Dauphin area. Specifically, the areas west of Brandon, including Virden and Melita, could experience 50 to 80 millimeters of rainfall, possibly reaching up to 120 millimeters in severe thunderstorm-hit areas, according to a Manitoba government news release.

The potential heavy rainfall may also affect the Saskatchewan area of the Souris River basin, as mentioned by the province. Environment and Climate Change Canada released special weather statements for several regions in western Manitoba on Friday, with ongoing alerts encompassing areas in and around Dauphin and Riding Mountain National Park. The statement mentioned that rain is persisting in southeastern Saskatchewan and parts of western Manitoba, expected to continue throughout the day and taper off overnight.

In late June, a previous overland flood warning was issued for parts of western Manitoba. The region has faced challenges with heavy storms and flooding this year, impacting communities like Dauphin, Minitonas, and Swan River significantly. Numerous municipalities have declared local states of emergency due to flooding and storm-related issues. Looking ahead, Environment Canada’s forecast for Winnipeg on Friday afternoon indicated periods of rain starting around midnight Saturday and lasting through the morning.

The area under concern is receiving attention with the issuance of an overland flood watch, emphasizing the need for preparedness and vigilance in the face of potential flooding threats.
