“Bondi Beach Terror Attack Spurs Calls for Gun Control Reform”

In the aftermath of the tragic Bondi Beach terror attack on Sunday, December 14, where 16 individuals lost their lives, authorities have confirmed that one of the suspected gunmen, Sajid Akram, possessed a gun license designated for ‘hunting’. The license, categorized as AB, allowed him to own the long firearms used in the incident.

Sajid Akram, who is the father of Naveed Akram, a 24-year-old who was also involved in the attack, held licenses for six firearms. Premier Chris Minns has expressed the need for a change in gun regulations following this devastating event.

The gunmen targeted a Jewish event commemorating the first day of Hanukkah, resulting in 15 innocent fatalities and leaving 38 individuals hospitalized. The New South Wales Police confirmed these details.

NSW Police Commissioner, Mal Lanyon, mentioned that the 50-year-old gunman met the necessary requirements for a firearms license linked to recreational hunting. The license, issued in 2015, granted him permission for owning the specific firearms.

Authorities are still investigating the background of the individuals involved, as very limited information is currently available. Additionally, the police discovered six firearms and labeled some devices found in a vehicle as “fairly basic,” which were safely removed.

Premier Chris Minns emphasized the urgency for legislative changes concerning firearms in New South Wales, indicating that actions will be taken promptly. He hinted at the possibility of recalling parliament to expedite the process.

Several investigations are ongoing, including a joint counterterrorism inquiry led by the police counterterrorism command and a critical incident examination. Bondi continues to have a heightened police presence, with over 320 officers deployed, including off-duty personnel offering support.
