Two Canadian researchers have been recognized in a global image competition that celebrates ecological research. The 2026 joint BMC Ecology and Evolution and BMC Zoology image competition honored 11 photos taken by researchers from around the world at different stages of their careers. The images portray animals in their natural habitats, scientists and students conducting ecological research, and various natural landscapes.
Liam Brennan, a master’s student and photographer at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), won the competition’s research in action category with his photo titled “Intertidal education.” On the other hand, Allen (Haolun) Tian, a post-doctoral researcher associated with Queen’s University, Hangzhou Normal University, and Zhejiang University in China, claimed victory in the category “protecting our planet” with his image named “A bridge between past and present.”
For researchers, photographs serve as a means to document their work and provide insight into the world of science. Brennan emphasized the importance of images in building public trust in environmental education and ecological research, highlighting the value of these endeavors.
Brennan’s winning photo, “Intertidal education,” was captured while overseeing undergraduate students monitoring coastal fish species in St. Andrews, N.B. The image showcases the students engaged in their research activities under the moonlight, symbolizing a moment of curiosity and discovery.
Tian’s award-winning image, “A bridge between past and present,” features a compilation of 33 drone photos of the Long Sault Parkway in the upper St. Lawrence River, connecting 11 islands. He expressed his passion for capturing the beauty of ecosystems, even those impacted by human activities, to raise awareness about conservation efforts.
Both photographers believe that images play a crucial role in fostering “natural empathy” towards the environment and scientific research. Through their visually captivating work, they aim to inspire others to appreciate and protect the natural world.
The BMC Ecology and Zoology image competition also recognized other outstanding entries, showcasing the diverse and impactful research being conducted worldwide. Overall, the competition serves as a platform to showcase the beauty of nature and the significance of ecological studies.
