“Jewish Entertainment Industry Voices Stand by Mark Ruffalo”

More than 170 Jewish members of the entertainment industry, including notable figures like Hannah Einbinder, Joel Coen, and Canadian filmmaker Emma Seligman, have penned an open letter in defense of American actor Mark Ruffalo, denouncing what they perceive as an unwarranted attack on his reputation.

The letter, released on Tuesday, expresses solidarity with Ruffalo amidst what the signatories describe as a baseless and harmful campaign of allegations of antisemitism. Ruffalo has come under fire for his vocal opposition to Paramount Skydance’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, linking the deal to the conflict in Gaza.

Paramount Skydance, partially owned by CEO David Ellison and his father Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle, has a known affiliation with Israel, with a senior executive previously acknowledging technology sharing with the Israeli military.

Efforts to obtain comments from Ruffalo’s representatives, Paramount Skydance, and Oracle regarding the situation have been made by CBC News.

In response to Ruffalo’s criticisms, Paramount accused him of invoking antisemitic stereotypes, prompting a back-and-forth exchange between the actor and the studio.

The ongoing dispute has delayed the $110 billion US merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. until June 2027, following legal challenges raised by 12 U.S. state attorneys general concerned about antitrust issues.

The letter supporting Ruffalo also features endorsements from various prominent individuals, including author Naomi Klein, retired rabbi David Mivasair, physician Gabor Maté, American actor Ilana Glazer, and filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun, all expressing solidarity with the actor’s stance.

Ruffalo, who has refrained from publicly addressing the most recent letter, has reiterated that his criticism is targeted at specific actions and individuals rather than the Jewish community as a whole.

The actor has raised concerns about the potential implications of the merger, labeling it as a “classic antitrust case” that could lead to negative consequences such as job losses and reduced competition in the industry.

Oracle’s public support for Israel has been highlighted in the context of the broader debate, with the company emphasizing its commitment to the country despite potential business repercussions.

The conflict surrounding Ruffalo’s statements underscores the complex intersection of entertainment, politics, and social activism, with divergent perspectives on the appropriate boundaries of public discourse and advocacy.
