GOP Lawmakers Stand Firm with Trump in Trade Dispute

Republican lawmakers in Congress are openly supporting President Donald Trump in his trade dispute with Canada, blaming Prime Minister Mark Carney’s administration for walking away from negotiations. A group of GOP House members met with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on Capitol Hill to discuss tariffs, with some expressing concerns about potential negative impacts on their re-election chances. Despite this, most members voiced backing for Trump’s trade approach.

Texas Representative August Pfluger commended Trump for bringing back manufacturing jobs to the U.S. and criticized Canada for their role in the trade conflict. Brian Mast, a Congressman from Florida, also criticized Canada for the breakdown in trade talks. Greer did not disclose details of the negotiations with Canada after the meeting.

Meanwhile, at the White House, Trump reiterated his belief that Canada has been taking advantage of the U.S. in trade. He specifically mentioned Canada’s restrictions on U.S. bank operations as a major grievance. Trump emphasized the importance of addressing these issues, highlighting the economic significance of U.S.-Canada trade relations.

On Capitol Hill, Representative Ralph Norman from South Carolina expressed concerns about the trade war’s impact on voters’ affordability. He mentioned that Greer acknowledged these concerns and is open to addressing how tariffs are affecting each state. Despite public opinion against Trump’s tariffs, many Congressional Republicans continue to support the trade war with Canada, echoing Trump’s arguments and emphasizing the importance of the U.S. in the economic relationship with Canada.
