A shocking video has emerged capturing the moment a driver of a Mercedes crashed into a roundabout, causing the vehicle to fly over multiple cars on a busy street, miraculously surviving the ordeal.
The CCTV footage shows the car speeding down a city road, hitting the curb at a roundabout, and launching into the air. The Mercedes narrowly missed the camera as it somersaulted over a bus and two cars before eventually colliding with a pole at the roadside.
Authorities in Oradea, a city in northwestern Romania, reported that the incident occurred when the 49-year-old driver experienced a diabetic episode, leading to a loss of control over the vehicle, resulting in the high-speed impact with the roundabout.
Eyewitnesses from nearby residences recounted hearing a loud crash, with some residents rushing out as emergency services rescued the driver from the wreckage and transported him to a medical facility. The driver had entered the roundabout in the wrong direction, striking the central island at a high velocity, causing the vehicle to become airborne.
The car soared through the air, clearing a hedge before crashing into a metal pole close to a petrol station. Fortunately, the vehicle narrowly missed a large petrol pump, averting a potentially catastrophic explosion.
Although the driver sustained multiple fractures, they did not suffer life-threatening injuries. Medical professionals later confirmed that the driver, who was unconscious during the incident, had experienced severe hypoglycemia due to low blood sugar levels.
Subsequently, law enforcement suspended the driver’s license for 90 days and imposed a fine. In Romania and many EU countries, including the UK, drivers with diabetes must demonstrate an understanding of the risks associated with hypoglycemia, with repeated episodes potentially rendering them unfit to drive.
In a separate incident earlier this year, shocking footage captured a drink driver flipping their car at 116mph on the A1 near Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. Firefighters had to extricate the driver, who was found to be over twice the legal alcohol limit, from the severely damaged vehicle.
The driver, Michael Bailey, faced charges of drink driving and dangerous driving, appearing in court where they received a suspended prison sentence. Reflecting on the case, PC Callum Watson of Cambridgeshire Police emphasized the fortunate outcome given the high-speed nature of the crash, underscoring the potential for more severe consequences.
