The latest rankings have revealed the top-performing grammar and comprehensive schools across the UK. The prestigious Sunday Times Parent Power Guide 2026 evaluated schools based on their exam performance in summer 2025. Grammar Queen Elizabeth’s School in Barnet claimed the top position among state schools, while Dame Alice Owen’s School in Potters Bar secured the top spot for comprehensives in the South East and nationwide.
Comprehensive schools, open to all students regardless of academic ability, educate students together, unlike selective grammar schools. Both types of schools are government-funded, adhering to the national curriculum without charging fees to parents.
The rankings showcased West London Free School as the second-best comprehensive school, with London schools dominating half of the top 20 comprehensive spots and 12 top-ranked state primary schools. Noteworthy achievements include Thomas Jones Primary School in London moving up to become the top primary school, Wilson’s School in Wallington excelling as the best state school for GCSEs, and St Paul’s School in London leading as the top private school in the country.

Additionally, the guide highlights the top state, comprehensive, and private schools in each region, emphasizing academic excellence. Schools like The King’s School in Grantham and St Leonard’s RC School in Durham were recognized for their outstanding performance in their respective regions.
Rankings were determined by calculating top grades at GCSE and A-level as a percentage of total entries at each school. The ongoing pursuit of excellence in education continues to shape the future of students across the UK.
