“Russia Falsely Labeling Deceased Soldiers as Deserters in Ukraine Conflict”

Russia is overstating its military achievements in Ukraine and concealing battlefield casualties by falsely labeling deceased soldiers as deserters to advance peace negotiations. This development coincides with the concentration of approximately 156,000 Russian troops in the conflict zone as part of Moscow’s strategy to mislead the Russian public about the true nature of the war.

Claims from the Kremlin about a triumph in Pokrovsk were refuted by Kyiv’s top military leader, who exposed reports of Russian soldiers being executed by their own ranks. Despite assertions from Moscow of capturing the critical city of Pokrovsk, Kyiv’s military commander Olekdandr Syrsky clarified that the defense of Pokrovsk has persisted for 16 months, refuting any Russian victory claims.

Reports indicate that Russian units are manipulating casualty figures by listing deceased soldiers as absent without leave (AWOL), with sources within Moscow’s 30th Separate Mechanised Brigade revealing that numerous killed soldiers are falsely marked as deserters. Many of these fatalities, as reported in Ukraine, are attributed to Russian “barrier units” aiming to coerce troops into combat.

Furthermore, there are allegations that Russia is distorting the realities of the conflict to exert pressure on Kyiv and compel the U.S. to align with Kremlin demands. The Institute for the Study of War highlighted the Kremlin’s escalated efforts in cognitive warfare to portray the Russian military and economy as capable of winning a war of attrition against Ukraine.

While acknowledging the seriousness of certain frontline sectors, particularly in Pokrovsk and Hulyaipole, most of President Vladimir Putin’s claims regarding Russian victories do not align with actual battlefield conditions and do not suggest an imminent collapse of Ukrainian defenses. Concerns have arisen over U.S. President Donald Trump’s diminishing enthusiasm for peace talks and his attempts to coerce Kyiv into conceding to Russian demands.

President Zelensky of Ukraine stated that active collaboration between Ukraine and Europe is ongoing to outline steps toward ending the war comprehensively. Notably, plans developed jointly by Ukrainian and European counterparts are nearing completion and are expected to be presented to the U.S. shortly.

Since initiating a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian forces are estimated to have suffered well over one million casualties. The conflict began with Russia’s covert intervention in 2014, following the annexation of Crimea in the aftermath of Ukraine’s Maidan revolution.
