“UK Phone Users to Embrace Digital Voice Technology”

A significant change is on the horizon for phone users in the UK, as traditional copper landlines are set to be replaced by a new technology known as Digital Voice. This upgrade, scheduled to take effect in January 2027, will utilize broadband for making calls, offering enhanced features like clearer conversations, call forwarding to smartphones, and improved call screening to combat scams and spam messages.

To prepare for the transition, BT has launched a campaign fronted by Clare Balding called ‘Don’t Put Off the Switch.’ The initiative aims to raise awareness among homeowners about the impending change and the importance of ensuring their landlines are ready for the digital shift.

Despite the switch to Digital Voice, customers can expect to retain their existing phone numbers, and costs are not anticipated to rise. Most households will simply need to connect their current phones to their broadband hubs instead of the traditional wall sockets, eliminating the need for engineer visits in most cases. However, if any issues arise, contacting the service provider for assistance may be necessary.

Lucy Baker, Consumer Digital Voice Director at BT, emphasized the significance of heeding messages from service providers to avoid disruptions in essential connections. She highlighted that the transition to digital landlines represents a crucial upgrade to the UK’s communications infrastructure, promoting more reliable and secure technology for everyone.

Digital Voice, BT’s new home phone service, offers advanced features like Multi Call and call diversion to mobile phones, enhancing user experience. It ensures improved call quality and eliminates issues like crackling conversations, provided users have compatible Digital Home phones.

Upgrading to Digital Voice should not alter how households use their phones, as the service is bundled with broadband at no additional cost. BT also advises customers with special requirements, such as those using telecare devices, to inform their providers promptly for tailored support.

Overall, the shift to Digital Voice signifies a significant technological advancement in communication services, aiming to provide a seamless and enhanced user experience for customers across the UK.
