The Vancouver Rise have received reinforcements as they gear up for a crucial match against the Halifax Tides. The Northern Super League team welcomed two new defenders this week to strengthen their squad.
Chantelle Swaby, who previously played for Leicester City in the Women’s Super League, and Kaela Hansen, formerly of NSL side AFC Toronto, have joined the Rise. Head coach Anja Heiner-Moller highlighted the valuable attributes both players bring to the team as they strive to position themselves for a playoff spot.
Swaby, aged 28, brings a wealth of experience from playing in various leagues worldwide, including the National Women’s Soccer League, the Scottish Women’s Premier League, and France’s top division. She emphasized her ability to maintain composure and provide leadership on the field.
Hansen, 26, expressed her excitement at returning to her hometown to play for the Rise. She mentioned the special significance of being closer to her family and playing in front of a home crowd.
The acquisitions of Swaby and Hansen came after the retirement of Mariah Lee, who decided to leave professional soccer to pursue a legal career. Additionally, Vancouver bid farewell to goalkeeper Kirstin Tynan, who was loaned to the Halifax Tides for the remainder of the season.
With a playoff spot in sight, the Vancouver Rise (5-9-1) are aiming to secure their position in the post-season. Currently trailing Halifax by five points, the defending NSL champions are focused on making a strong push for the playoffs. Forward Jessica De Fillippo emphasized the team’s determination to showcase their competitiveness and make a return to the playoffs.
