A tragic incident claimed the lives of a young Italian couple, Chiara Garofalo and Antonio Graziadio, both 20 years old, in a nighttime collision shortly after Chiara’s birthday in the town of Cassano allo Ionio in southern Italy. The fatal crash occurred on Sunday when the Fiat Panda they were in collided head-on with an Alfa Romeo Mito around 3:30 am on the Jonica state road, leaving two other passengers, aged 16 and 18, seriously injured.
Despite efforts by emergency medical teams to revive them, Chiara and Antonio were pronounced dead at the scene. Chiara assisted in her family’s bakery, while Antonio worked as an electrician, as reported by Italian media.
The local mayor, Gianpaolo Iacobini, expressed the community’s grief over the untimely loss of the young couple, stating, “It is difficult to put into words, even more challenging to comprehend. Once again, Cassano mourns its children who were taken away from life too soon. Let’s offer our prayers to Chiara and Antonio and extend our support to their families. Our thoughts are also with the two other young individuals who sustained serious injuries.”
Authorities in Castrovillari have initiated an investigation into the incident and are considering the need for an autopsy.
