£35 Million in Cold Weather Payments Distributed to UK Households

Nearly 1.5 million households in England and Wales have already been granted cold weather payments this winter, as confirmed by the government. These payments, totaling £25 each, are issued when the average temperature in a specific area hits or is expected to reach zero degrees Celsius or below for seven consecutive days. The recent sub-zero temperatures in early 2026 have led to additional payments for eligible households.

The cold weather payments were activated due to temperatures dropping below zero at over 30 Met Office weather stations nationwide. Last winter, approximately 1.4 million cold weather payments were distributed. The Department for Work and Pensions reports that over £35 million has been disbursed to vulnerable households in England and Wales this winter, running from November 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026.

Eligibility for Cold Weather Payments typically applies to individuals receiving Pension Credit. Those on Universal Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, and Support for Mortgage Interest may also qualify based on various criteria such as employment status, health conditions, disabilities, or caregiving responsibilities for young or disabled children.

In Scotland, residents do not receive Cold Weather Payments but may qualify for an annual Winter Heating Payment instead. Pat McFadden, the Pensions Secretary, emphasized the importance of this support for vulnerable households during extreme weather conditions. Alongside other cost-of-living assistance like a higher National Living Wage, energy bill reductions, and Winter Fuel Payments for pensioners, these measures are significantly aiding households nationwide.

Low-income pensioners are encouraged to apply for Pension Credit, which offers additional support such as help with housing expenses, NHS dental care, council tax discounts, energy cost assistance, and free TV licenses for those over 75. Despite the availability of support, many eligible pensioners are not claiming Pension Credit, missing out on essential financial aid. Organizations like Age UK stress the importance of ensuring that valuable assistance reaches those who need it most.

In 2023/24, statistics revealed that nearly one million pensioners eligible for Pension Credit were not accessing it, resulting in significant financial losses. The charity Independent Age underscores the critical role Cold Weather Payments play in assisting individuals during cold periods. The investment of £35 million by the UK Government to support individuals struggling with heating costs is praised, with a call for continued collaboration to ensure that older people on low incomes receive the necessary financial backing.
