“Prison Tutor Admits Inmate Affair”

A prison tutor, Melissa Murphy, 48, confessed to engaging in an inappropriate relationship with an inmate at HMP Chelmsford. The affair came to light when a staff member tried to enter a locked classroom where Murphy and the prisoner were alone. Authorities found a collection of letters exchanged between Murphy (formerly Melissa O’Brien) and the inmate, along with a photo of him in her home.

Murphy, who had been working at the prison for four years, met the inmate in the summer of 2023 and received the first letter from him in November of the same year. Instead of reporting the communication, Murphy responded, leading to a series of letters implying a relationship between them. Concern arose when another staff member attempted to enter the locked classroom, discovering the keys missing from the person trying to access the room.

Following the incident, Murphy was arrested. Subsequent investigations at her residence unveiled additional letters and a photo of the inmate in her bedroom. Murphy, residing in Chelmsford, was arrested in December 2023, dismissed from her teaching role at HMP Chelmsford, and later charged with misconduct in a public office, to which she pleaded guilty in November 2025.

Detective Constable Becky Sparrow of Essex Police emphasized that Murphy’s actions breached trust boundaries and jeopardized the vulnerable position of the inmate. Sparrow stressed the importance of maintaining the integrity of all individuals within the criminal justice system to ensure the safety of prisoners and the public. Collaboration with HMP Chelmsford’s security department and staff was pivotal in building a robust case that led to Murphy’s confession.
