Millions of internet users in the UK are familiar with a common issue that arises when attempting to go online. The problem of online congestion is particularly frustrating during evenings when households engage in activities like streaming movies, downloading files, and video calling friends simultaneously.
Typically, broadband speeds remain fast and reliable during working hours when fewer people are online at home. However, as evening sets in and more households connect to the internet after work, local networks can become overwhelmed, leading to noticeable slowdowns in internet speeds.
To illustrate, broadband operates similarly to a motorway; the more users on the network simultaneously, the slower the overall speed. This is why many households experience a significant performance drop between 7 pm and 11 pm.
A recent study conducted by Broadband Genie has revealed the UK areas most impacted by slowdowns during peak hours, with Wigan (WN1) ranking at the top. In this area, average download speeds plummet from 167Mbps during off-peak times to just 75Mbps in the evening, marking a 55% decrease.
Other regions heavily affected by evening congestion include Galashiels (TD1), Harrogate (HG1), Exeter (EX1), and Rochester (ME1).
Not all parts of the UK face evening slowdowns, as some areas actually experience improved speeds during peak times. Newport emerged as the top-performing location in the study, followed by Oxford, Glasgow, Blackburn, and Cambridge.
Broadband Genie pointed out, “Have you ever noticed your broadband slowing down in the evening? Just like our roads, internet networks can experience congestion.” The study analyzed 144,509 broadband speed tests to identify areas where performance fluctuates the most during peak hours.
Customers in Wigan witnessed the most significant drop in speeds, with an average decrease of 55% during peak hours.
Furthermore, the report highlighted regional variations across the UK, with Scotland leading in overall performance improvements during evening hours. Wales and the East of England also demonstrated strong performance.
On the contrary, the South West experienced a decrease of around 15% in average speeds during peak periods compared to daytime performance.
Broadband experts suggest several ways households can enhance their home connections, such as placing routers in open, central locations away from obstructions to improve signal quality. Providers like Virgin Media recommend regular router reboots to address temporary network issues.
