Michael van Gerwen criticized Michael Unterbuchner as ‘not up to par’ following a commanding 6-2 victory at the European Darts Grand Prix on Saturday. The Dutch player easily advanced to the round-of-16 after defeating Unterbuchner, who had made a lighthearted comment about facing Van Gerwen the day before.
Having caused an upset by beating William O’Connor in the first round, Unterbuchner jokingly remarked, “Michael van Gerwen? Who’s that? No, no, just kidding. I’m looking forward to it.”
Displeased with Unterbuchner’s remarks, the three-time world champion stated after defeating the German, “He didn’t make a joke. He is one of those individuals who try to be humorous. He has never triumphed over me and never will. He lacks the skill – even my lower-level games are enough to defeat him, but it doesn’t matter. Onward to tomorrow.”
Van Gerwen showcased his skill during the match, achieving an average of 91 and executing a remarkable 102 checkout. He is set to face compatriot Jermaine Wattimena in the last-16 round, who emerged victorious in an all-Dutch encounter against Kevin Doets.
Reflecting on his performance, Van Gerwen remarked, “Who cares? I secured the leg, and that is what counts the most. The audience is enjoying themselves – that is the only thing that matters. It has been a while since my last victory here, so hopefully, I can put up a good fight tomorrow.”
Van Gerwen emphasized the importance of playing well in his upcoming matches, especially against Wattimena, who he acknowledges as a talented player. In another surprising turn of events, Niko Springer defeated defending champion Gary Anderson with a stunning 6-3 win, setting up a match against Danny Noppert from the Netherlands.
Expressing his delight after the triumph, 25-year-old Springer stated, “It feels extremely gratifying. I have a strong support system here, whether it’s family or friends – it’s close to my home. I appreciate the support I received today and am thrilled.”
