The proposed changes focus on enhancing energy management, fuel energy flow characteristics, and optimizing Qualifying sessions while maintaining the exciting racing brought about by the current regulations. They involve a phased adjustment of the contribution from the Internal Combustion Engine and Energy Recovery System over the 2027 and 2028 seasons, including targeted modifications to engine output, fuel energy flow, and energy recovery system deployment, along with increased flexibility in energy management.
Initially aimed for full implementation before the 2027 season, the changes faced resistance from some power unit manufacturers, leading to a compromise agreement for a gradual introduction of the modifications. The revised regulations are expected to reduce reliance on the battery, addressing issues such as derating on long straights.
Driver complaints in the current season regarding the 50/50 split between electric and combustion engines have prompted action to alleviate the challenges faced by drivers.
