Quebec Demands Answers After Child Denied Medical Care

Quebec officials are expressing strong disapproval following the tragic passing of a four-year-old child in the Nunavik village of Ivujivik amid reports suggesting that the youngster was denied necessary medical care.

In a press statement released on Thursday, Sol Zanetti, speaking on behalf of Québec Solidaire, is demanding transparency regarding the demise of Jusi Padlayat, who, as per Zanetti, succumbed on August 3 after being taken by his parents to the local clinic multiple times for stomach discomfort but allegedly not receiving treatment.

Padlayat’s grandmother, Annie Mangiuk, in an interview with La Presse, stated that the family’s concerns were dismissed by medical personnel who advised administering Advil or Tylenol to the child. According to Mangiuk, Padlayat was discovered unconscious on August 1, taken to the local nursing station, and later transferred to the Montreal Children’s Hospital, where he passed away two days later.

Zanetti condemned the prolonged suffering of a child as unacceptable and highlighted concerns about possible neglect, urging a thorough investigation into any potential systemic racism within the healthcare system.

The Quebec Liberal Party (QLP) has also called for enhancements in healthcare services for northern regions, proposing increased telemedicine options to address such issues. Sandrine Rioux, the QLP’s candidate in Ungava, which encompasses Ivujivik, emphasized the importance of ensuring healthcare accessibility regardless of geographical location.

The tragic incident has reignited discussions on the need for dignity and respect within the healthcare system, drawing parallels to the case of Joyce Echaquan, an Atikamekw woman who recorded staff at a Joliette hospital making racist remarks as she was dying.

The Inuulitsivik Health Centre and the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services have pledged internal and external reviews in response to the incident, while Quebec’s coroners office has confirmed an ongoing investigation without disclosing specifics on the causes or circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

The Montreal Children’s Hospital declined to comment on individual cases.
