Norway Mourns Passing of King Harald at 89

Norway’s King Harald, a modernizing figure who emerged from the shadow of his charismatic father during his more than three-decade reign, passed away at the age of 89, the royal palace announced on Friday amidst ongoing challenges for the Norwegian royal family.

The royal palace confirmed King Harald’s peaceful passing at Oslo University Hospital on Friday, August 28, at 6:35 AM local time. The monarch, Europe’s oldest reigning king, had been admitted to the hospital on August 17 for treatment of a bacterial blood infection.

In 2024, King Harald was hospitalized in Malaysia during a holiday for an infection and received medical procedures including a temporary pacemaker before being flown back to Norway by the armed forces for further treatment that led to the implantation of a permanent device.

Despite reducing his official engagements in 2024, King Harald, who had been Norway’s ceremonial head of state since 1991, remained committed to his lifelong oath as king and dismissed any thoughts of abdication.

Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his condolences, acknowledging King Harald’s deep ties to Canada, including his visits to Toronto and Little Norway during wartime exile, and a state visit in 2002 that covered Ontario, Newfoundland, Labrador, and Nova Scotia.

The passing of King Harald comes at a challenging period for the royal family, with Crown Princess Mette-Marit under public scrutiny for her association with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Additionally, her son, Marius Hoiby, from a previous relationship, was recently convicted on rape and domestic violence charges, receiving a four-year prison sentence that is currently under appeal.

King Harald, a descendant of Queen Victoria, ascended to the throne in 1991 and modernized the ceremonial role of the monarch, blending traditional symbolism with contemporary elements, showcasing his ability to comfort the nation during times of tragedy and disaster.

Embracing openness and tolerance, King Harald advocated for diversity and inclusivity, hosting a ball in 2005 to mark Norway’s independence centenary and cautioning against regressing from progress towards openness within European royal families.
