The Professional Women’s Hockey League informed The Associated Press that the Montreal Victoire’s Walter Cup trophy is currently missing. The league stated that the trophy did not arrive at its intended destination and is collaborating with the shipping company to locate it.
Originally scheduled to be sent to Lethbridge, Alberta, for a day with Victoire forward Dara Greig, the Walter Cup did not arrive with the shipment as expected. Consequently, Greig had to postpone her scheduled public appearance with the trophy at VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
Unlike the NHL’s Stanley Cup, the PWHL does not assign a dedicated individual to accompany the trophy during its travels to be with the players. The missing Walter Cup is a replica given to championship-winning teams, distinct from the one permanently displayed at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
Both the original and team’s version of the Walter Cup are crafted from sterling silver by Tiffany & Co., weighing approximately 35 pounds and standing at 24 inches in height and 13 inches in width. The cup features six engraved W’s symbolizing the league’s original franchises and rests on two rods resembling hockey sticks, with the base showcasing past championship teams.
Montreal secured the cup by defeating Ottawa in May, making them the first Canadian team to win the PWHL title. The trophy honors PWHL founder Mark Walter and his wife Kimbra, who are the primary financiers of the league.
