“Search for New Library Site in St. John’s West End Hits Snag”

A campaign to locate a new site for a library in the west end of St. John’s has encountered a setback, but an advocate remains optimistic about finding a suitable location soon.

The Michael Donovan Public Library closed its doors at the Waterford Valley Mall on Topsail Road two months ago when its lease expired. Despite the closure, the library, known for its modest size, was popular among patrons.

A recent tender initiated by the provincial government to secure a new location for the library did not receive any submissions, as per AllNewfoundlandLabrador. Josh Smee, the vice-chair of Friends of the St. John’s Public Library, expressed frustration and disappointment over the lack of progress, emphasizing the community’s need for a library.

Smee emphasized the significance of the library to its patrons and highlighted the ongoing interest in reopening it in the west end. He urged landlords in the area to participate in the process and pay attention to future opportunities.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure, in consultation with Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries, is currently reviewing the situation to determine the next steps. They reaffirmed the commitment to keeping the library in the west end of St. John’s.

Library user Juanette Anthony shared her disappointment at the closure, mentioning the convenience of the library’s computer facilities. She expressed a desire for the library to reopen in a larger space with enhanced resources.

Smee remains hopeful for a successful outcome in the next round of tenders, noting the community’s strong attachment to the library and the dedicated efforts of its staff.
