“Ontario Announces Expansion of Casinos in Niagara Region”

The Ontario government has recently made an announcement signaling the potential arrival of more casinos in the Niagara Region. Premier Doug Ford unveiled the Destination Niagara initiative in December, aiming to attract a larger number of tourists to the area by introducing new casinos, a theme park, expanded airport facilities, and other amenities.

Ontario’s interim minister overseeing tourism, culture, and gaming disclosed that the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. has brokered a deal with MGE Niagara Entertainment Inc. to terminate existing exclusivity rights, thereby paving the way for additional casino operators. While MGE will retain control over Fallsview Casino Resort and Casino Niagara, it has agreed to relinquish its exclusive rights.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. is slated to initiate a procurement process later this year to explore potential new casino operators for the region. However, there has been notable opposition from local residents concerning Premier Ford’s proposal under Destination Niagara to install a second ferris wheel near the falls.

Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati expressed his skepticism about the idea, labeling it as a “dead issue.” He emphasized the lack of support for a Ferris wheel in Queen Victoria Park, echoing sentiments shared by others in the community.
