An incoming asteroid is packed with the essential elements for life, according to scientists, potentially reshaping our understanding of the cosmos.

Researchers uncovered traces of ancient water and a peculiar substance dubbed ‘space gum’ on an asteroid called Bennu. This groundbreaking discovery was made possible by a spacecraft that retrieved a sample from the asteroid, located 63 million kilometers away from Earth.

Alexandra Doten, an expert in space communications, shared this significant development on TikTok, emphasizing the potential insights it offers into the origins of life.

Experts from Tohoku University in Japan identified crucial sugars within the asteroid – a first in extraterrestrial samples. Meanwhile, NASA scientists were puzzled by a malleable, gum-like material found exclusively on Bennu. Alexandra highlighted the team’s remarkable findings, noting the presence of high carbon content, water, and organic compounds on the asteroid, pointing to the building blocks of life.

Describing Bennu as a remnant of an ancient watery world traversing space for billions of years, Alexandra revealed that the asteroid is rich in nitrogen, organic compounds, and serpentine mineral, resembling rocks found in Earth’s underwater ridges.

The discovery of amino acids, nucleotide bases crucial for DNA and RNA, and essential sugars on Bennu indicates the potential prevalence of RNA in early life forms, suggesting significant implications for the universe.

Additionally, a separate study in the journal Natural Astronomy detailed the presence of a gum-like substance on the asteroid, described as pliable and affected by radiation exposure. Another study led by Ann Nguyen from NASA’s Johnson Space Centre uncovered a high amount of dust from ancient supernova explosions predating our solar system.
