“Beloved 104-Year-Old Gopher Tortoise Gus Receives Global Support for Surgery”

A treasured 104-year-old gopher tortoise named Gus is being showered with love and support from well-wishers worldwide as he prepares for surgery. Jeff Gray, the Museum of Natural History manager in Halifax where Gus resides, mentioned that hundreds of letters, cards, and artworks have poured in for Gus since the announcement of his upcoming surgery to remove a bladder stone. The museum’s social media platforms have also been flooded with thousands of messages from people in Canada and beyond, expressing their good wishes for Gus.

Gray expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming response, highlighting how Gus has created a special bond with visitors over the years. Gus is considered the oldest gopher tortoise globally and has been a fixture at the Museum of Natural History since 1942 when he was purchased for $5. Visitors often accompany Gus on his daily strolls around the museum’s premises, enjoying his company both indoors and outdoors.

Gus will be taking a hiatus from his public walks to recuperate privately at the museum after the surgery. The veterinary team noticed a bladder stone in Gus back in 2009, which has now grown and is causing discomfort. Fortunately, advancements in veterinary surgery will allow the stone to be removed through a small incision in Gus’s leg, avoiding the need to drill through his shell as was previously necessary.

While surgeries on reptiles of Gus’s age are rare, the team is optimistic that the procedure will enhance his health and well-being. Despite his age surpassing the typical lifespan of gopher tortoises in the wild, Gus remains in good health, which bodes well for his recovery. The surgery aims to prevent further complications and ensure Gus’s comfort in the years to come.

Visitors, including university students from Germany, have been captivated by Gus’s charm and are rooting for his successful surgery. Gray emphasized the importance of providing a secure environment for captive tortoises like Gus to prolong their lives, contrasting the risks they face in the wild due to human activities.

As Gus prepares for his surgery, his admirers continue to show their support, eager to see him return to his public walks once he has fully recovered.
