Brooke Henderson is in contention at the CPKC Women’s Open in Edmonton, with room to improve her position. The defending champion from Smiths Falls, Ontario, aiming for her third victory in Canada’s LPGA tournament, carded a 68 in the second round on Friday, placing her at 5-under par.
Heading into the final two rounds, Henderson trails the leader, Soo Bin Joo of South Korea, by four strokes, as Joo sits at 9 under at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club in Edmonton. Despite being 7 under earlier in the round, Henderson encountered trouble with two bogeys on the back nine, including a tee shot that hit a spectator. Henderson promptly apologized to the spectator and gifted her a golf ball.
Aphrodite Deng from Calgary, the low amateur in last year’s tournament in Mississauga, finished strong with consecutive birdies, posting a 67 to reach 3 under.
In this $2.75 million US event, the cut line will include the top 65 players and ties. Canadian teenagers Anna Huang from Vancouver and Michelle Xing from Richmond Hill, Ontario, who began the day three shots off the lead at 5 under, had tee times scheduled for the afternoon session.
