Canadian filmmaker Matt Johnson appeared relaxed last week, just four days away from his wedding and eight days before commencing filming for his upcoming movie. Johnson, casually dressed in a T-shirt and sweatpants, visited Toronto’s Revue Cinema for an interview with CBC News about “Tony,” a biopic centered on the early life of renowned chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain.
Despite Bourdain’s iconic status following his tragic death in 2018, Johnson expressed comfort in sharing his story, stating he had no prior attachment to Bourdain’s persona or reputation. Initially not intending to create a film about Bourdain, Johnson’s perspective changed after meeting actor Dominic Sessa, who plays the lead role in the movie.
Sessa, aged 23, was cast as the young Bourdain, and Johnson crafted the script based on Bourdain’s experiences detailed in his book “Kitchen Confidential,” focusing on one summer in Provincetown, Mass. The duo, unfamiliar with Bourdain’s work, aimed to capture the essence of a young, aspiring chef finding his footing in the culinary world.
By concentrating on Bourdain’s formative years, Johnson sidestepped the pressure of portraying the older, more established Bourdain, known to many as a revered figure. The narrative delves into Bourdain’s journey of self-discovery, exploring his relationships and struggles as a young adult.
“Tony” delves into themes of youth, growth, and self-identity, aiming to offer a fresh perspective on Bourdain’s life for his admirers. The film, starring Sessa and set to premiere in Canadian theaters on August 14, encapsulates a pivotal chapter in the legendary chef’s life.
