“Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse” Revives Classic Series

In 1986, the Nintendo Entertainment System saw the release of a standout title known as “Castlevania,” featuring monster-fighting action, challenging gameplay, and a catchy soundtrack. Despite its initial success, the series has remained relatively dormant, with the last new installment dating back to 2014.

Now, “Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse” aims to revive interest among both new and longtime fans by drawing inspiration from various chapters of the series’ history and independent games it has influenced over the years. The game successfully combines classic 2D exploration with stunning artistic design, offering a nostalgic yet fresh experience. However, its high level of difficulty may pose a challenge for newcomers to the genre.

Set in 1499, “Belmont’s Curse” follows the story of Rose Belmont, the daughter of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades from the 1989 title “Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse.” As Paris faces a monstrous threat, Rose embarks on a journey to uncover the mysteries surrounding the city while dealing with a curse inherited from her mother. The game delves into the rich history of the Belmont family, intertwining familiar elements with new twists.

The gameplay mechanics in “Belmont’s Curse” resemble the beloved 1997 title “Symphony of the Night,” incorporating elements from iconic Nintendo franchises like Metroid and Zelda. Players guide Rose through intricate levels within Paris and Dracula’s castle, discovering new abilities to overcome obstacles and uncover hidden secrets. The game’s exploration-driven approach, known as “Metroidvania,” offers a sense of familiarity amid the resurgence of indie games inspired by this genre.

While the game impresses with its captivating visuals and engaging soundtrack, the steep difficulty level may deter some players. Combat encounters are intense, requiring precise timing and strategic thinking to progress. Additionally, the game’s design challenges players with intricate trap rooms and demanding platforming sections, adding to the overall difficulty curve.

Despite its strengths, “Belmont’s Curse” faces criticism for its lack of convenient save points and excessive backtracking, making the journey feel arduous at times. The game’s art direction and musical score stand out as highlights, creating a vivid and atmospheric world for players to explore.

Although the Nintendo Switch version initially encountered performance issues, a Day 1 update addressed most of the concerns, improving visual quality and responsiveness across all platforms. Players can now enjoy a smoother experience on all devices, with the Xbox Series X version offering optimal performance.
