“Farage Under Fire: Cryptocurrency Scandal Rocks Reform UK”

Nigel Farage faces scrutiny over ties to cryptocurrency within Reform UK amid allegations of potential misuse of his authority as a Member of Parliament.

Following the disclosure of a £9 million contribution from cryptocurrency investor Christopher Harborne in August, the Electoral Commission has been urged to investigate the matter, marking it as the largest single donation on record in the party’s history.

The Liberal Democrats have voiced concerns about a possible conflict of interest after Farage mentioned the cryptocurrency Tether during a radio interview in September, with Harborne reportedly holding a stake of up to 12% in the company linked to Tether.

Calling for an inquiry into the situation, the Liberal Democrats have raised questions about the perceived connection between Mr. Farage and Tether, especially in light of the substantial donation from Harborne to Reform.

In response, Lib Dem Cabinet Office spokeswoman Lisa Smart emphasized the importance of maintaining public trust in the political system by avoiding any association between political advocacy and sizable corporate contributions.

Moreover, Smart questioned the potential receipt of cryptocurrency donations by Farage, suggesting that if Reform possessed Tether while Farage promoted it, it could be seen as an abuse of his public position.

Labour’s chair Anna Turley demanded clarity from Farage, highlighting the need for transparency regarding the funding sources supporting him and any potential discrepancies between public declarations and disclosures to the Electoral Commission.

Reform UK has been urged to provide explanations regarding the handling of cryptocurrency donations, with the Electoral Commission confirming that no political party has reported receiving cryptocurrency donations, as they would be classified as non-monetary contributions.

Farage defended Harborne’s donation, stating that it was made without any expectations in return, emphasizing the businessman’s long-standing support for the Brexit cause and previous contributions to the Brexit Party.

Reform UK is yet to respond to requests for comments on the matter.
