Red Bull and Ferrari face a setback in their engine development plans as the FIA has announced its decision to Formula 1 teams after the initial evaluation phase. The new Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) framework allows manufacturers struggling in performance to qualify for enhancements to their power units.
While many believed Mercedes had the upper hand due to their strong start this season, the FIA’s communication at the Monaco Grand Prix disclosed a surprising outcome. The assessment of each manufacturer’s internal combustion engine (ICE) by the FIA revealed Red Bull’s power unit as the best performer, with Mercedes in second place and eligible for one development opportunity for being over two percent behind. Meanwhile, Ferrari, Audi, and Honda lagged by four percent or more.
The news has left many in the paddock puzzled and is expected to impact the competition among Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull at the front of the grid. Red Bull takes pride in having the top F1 combustion engine, reflecting the success of their dedicated efforts in engine development.
However, the announcement means Red Bull cannot make any modifications to their power units, lacking additional testing and cost cap budget allocations. On the other hand, manufacturers meeting the upgrade criteria will benefit from extra provisions in these areas.
Red Bull had hoped for the chance to upgrade their engines, but the FIA’s decision has reshuffled expectations. The confirmation of Red Bull’s engine superiority is likely to highlight their operational weaknesses. Ferrari, on the other hand, can homologate two upgrades this season due to their engine performance lagging behind Red Bull’s by more than four percent.
Mercedes’ newfound opportunity to develop their power units further has altered the dynamics at the top, challenging Ferrari’s anticipated progress. Despite the changes, Lewis Hamilton noted that any improvements resulting from the upgrades will take time to materialize.
As the FIA findings indicate, Mercedes has excelled in extracting performance from the electrical components of their power units, evident in their dominance on the track this season.
