“Flash Floods in Grand Canyon Lead to Tragic Discovery”

Severe flash floods in the Grand Canyon over the weekend led to the discovery of the remains of a Texas chiropractor and at least one other individual. Authorities conducted rescues for around 80 people affected by the flooding, with one person still unaccounted for. Using night vision technology and other tools, officials located individuals needing evacuation from the park. The park’s permit system and vehicle license plate checks were utilized to track missing persons.

There is a possibility that day hikers without permits, not documented by the park, could be missing, according to Grand Canyon deputy superintendent Brian Drapeaux. Meteorologists issued warnings of potential additional flooding due to heavy rainfall enveloping the canyon walls. The flooding severely damaged the sole water pipeline in the canyon, resulting in water restrictions for residents and the closure of lodges and hotels to park visitors.

Video footage captured the forceful flow of muddy floodwaters carrying debris through the canyon, including remnants of structures. The National Weather Service reported four successive waves of rainfall in two creek drainages during the weekend, causing rapid flash flooding. On average, the region receives less than 25 centimeters of rainfall annually.

The body of a 46-year-old individual was recovered near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River, with a second body also found, as per a statement from Grand Canyon National Park. The flooding destroyed footbridges over the creek, altering the landscape significantly.

Popular tourist spots like Bright Angel Campground, Phantom Ranch, and sections of the North Kaibab trail remained closed for assessment of the damage by park officials. Rafting activities on the Colorado River have been temporarily suspended. Hikers shared harrowing experiences of escaping the sudden floods, with one group narrowly avoiding a debris wall and seeking refuge in a cactus patch before being rescued by helicopter.
