The Gwich’in Tribal Council has decided to delay its upcoming annual general assembly that was originally set for next week. This postponement was announced in a press release on Thursday, citing the need for additional time to finalize certain financial documents.
Scheduled to commence in Fort McPherson next Wednesday, the meeting’s new dates and instructions for participation will be provided at a later time, as stated in the release. The decision to postpone was made after careful consideration of the crucial business usually addressed during the annual general assembly.
This delay echoes past instances where financial matters caused issues for the council. At the previous year’s gathering, the council revealed that it would not be able to present audited financial statements, a standard component of such assemblies. Delays in obtaining financial data from the Gwich’in Development Corporation (GDC), a company fully owned by the tribal council, were cited as reasons for this shortfall, with the council pointing to challenges within the GDC that hindered the completion of the required financial statements.
