A prominent contender for the Royal Ascot event encountered an unexpected injury while preparing for her final race before the prestigious competition.
Lady Of Camelot, under the guidance of trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott in Australia, has amassed a substantial earnings of nearly £3 million as a distinguished sprinter, notably triumphing in the 2024 Golden Slipper.
Initially set to participate in Royal Ascot this year, Lady Of Camelot was slated for the King Charles III Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes with odds of 8-1 and 10-1, respectively. However, a mishap during a routine beach exercise forced her withdrawal from the Doomben 10,000 race in Brisbane and subsequently from Royal Ascot.
According to local stewards, Lady Of Camelot sustained injuries to her near foreleg due to a stingray encounter during a morning swim. The mare received immediate treatment from the stable veterinarian, with further updates pending.
The owner’s statement on Instagram confirmed the incident, revealing that the filly was stung by a stingray and is currently under specialized veterinary care. Consequently, her participation in the Brisbane Winter Carnival and international campaigns has been terminated.
Expressing disappointment over the situation, a team spokesperson emphasized Lady Of Camelot’s exceptional abilities and the priority of ensuring her well-being and recovery.
Lady Of Camelot was among two Australian-trained sprinters withdrawn from Royal Ascot entries on Tuesday, with Generosity, trained by Chris Waller, also excluded. Despite these setbacks, Waller will still be represented by Joliestar, and debutant Overpass from Bjorn Baker, while Asfoora, under Henry Dwyer’s tutelage and a previous King Charles winner, remains in contention.
