Kelly Clarkson engaged in a dispute with a unique store in Brooklyn over the weekend, claiming they treated her poorly when she asked about the price of a special item that the store insists was never intended for sale.
The conflict began when the singer shared on Saturday that she had visited a store in Brooklyn that caught her eye. Clarkson expressed her intention to make purchases but felt insulted by the staff’s response, stating she was made to feel inadequate and offered a substitute item instead.
Clarkson recommended the store, Art of Play, to others if they wanted to experience treatment similar to Julia Roberts’ character in “Pretty Woman.” Art of Play specializes in home goods, puzzles, games, toys, and also features a small theater for magic shows.
In response, Art of Play clarified on Sunday that Clarkson had inquired about a unique bird automaton named “Molly,” which was not for sale as it was a permanent fixture on their wall. They emphasized that all customers are equally welcomed at their establishment, despite Clarkson’s perception.
Clarkson retaliated by posting a photo later that day showing a $15,000 price tag next to the wooden bird automaton, calling the store rude and dishonest. She highlighted the importance of kindness in interactions and criticized the store’s behavior.
The store defended itself on Monday, stating that they had offered Clarkson a similar item created by the artist behind Molly for $15,000. Additionally, they had another bird automaton for sale at $2,000, which Clarkson did not stay to see.
The dispute garnered mixed reactions online, with some supporting Clarkson for her stance and others criticizing both parties. The incident highlighted the significance of respectful customer service in all business interactions.
The controversy brought attention to the automaton named Molly, a wall-mounted wooden bird that moves realistically and sings when cranked. Created by artist Bliss Kolb, Molly is part of a series of wooden automatons available at varying prices on the artist’s website.
Despite the disagreement, the unique entertainment provided by Molly was praised for its ability to bring joy without relying on technology.
