Fears of potential violence have prompted the urgent implementation of special measures by police following widespread disturbances in a UK town.
Over the past few days, over 100 young individuals have engaged in violent activities in the town center of Oldham, including physical altercations and the hurling of fireworks. To address the situation and prevent further escalation, Greater Manchester Police have activated a Section 35 dispersal order and Section 60 stop and search powers.
The Section 35 order empowers officers to exclude individuals from the area for up to 48 hours using a written notice. Meanwhile, the Section 60 provision grants officers enhanced authority to conduct stop and searches on individuals within the vicinity for a period of 24 hours. These measures came into effect at 1.25 pm on Tuesday.
A significant brawl erupted as a group of men congregated in Oldham around 5 pm on Thursday, leading to chaos as the situation intensified.
To date, law enforcement has made five arrests, two related to violent disorder and three for possessing offensive weapons. A statement from Greater Manchester Police highlighted that neighborhood officers will maintain a noticeable presence in the area and will utilize these powers as needed to ensure public safety.
Inspector Amie Whitehead, Neighbourhood Inspector for Oldham South & West, emphasized the necessity of these measures in preventing further disturbances and safeguarding the well-being of residents, workers, and visitors in Oldham Town Center. The inspector reiterated a zero-tolerance stance towards antisocial behavior and promised decisive action against any perpetrators.
Whitehead also stressed the critical role of these powers in deterring future offenses and encouraged the public to engage with officers if they have any concerns or information that could assist in maintaining peace and security.
