Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has initiated a probe to determine if Fruit of the Loom and Hanes utilize harmful chemicals in the production of children’s undergarments. Paxton issued civil investigative demands to both companies, expressing concerns about the potential impact of these chemicals on children’s well-being without directly accusing them of any misconduct.
Fruit of the Loom and Berkshire Hathaway, as well as Hanes and Gildan Activewear, have been approached for comments, with only Gildan affirming cooperation with the investigation. Gildan emphasized its adherence to stringent manufacturing and sourcing standards to ensure compliance with industry regulations regarding hazardous substances, emphasizing its dedication to providing safe products.
Paxton highlighted the industry trend of using synthetic materials like polyester, rayon, and spandex to meet consumer demands for affordable clothing. He underscored research findings indicating that synthetic fabrics can release microplastics, while chemicals such as bisphenols, fluorine, parabens, phthalates, and persistent “forever chemicals” commonly used in textile production have been linked to various health issues like cancer, hormone disruption, and infertility.
Additionally, Paxton stressed the importance of safeguarding children by ensuring that essential products are free from toxic substances that could jeopardize their health. This investigation follows a similar inquiry launched in April concerning Lululemon Athletica activewear potentially containing these persistent chemicals.
Paxton, a Republican, is currently vying for a U.S. Senate seat against Democrat James Talarico, facing a challenging race closely monitored as one of the pivotal contests in the upcoming November 3 midterm elections.
