Sinner Withdraws from U.S. Open Due to Knee Injury

Top-seeded Jannik Sinner has opted out of the U.S. Open due to an ongoing right knee injury that has kept him out of action since his triumph at Wimbledon. Sinner, who clinched back-to-back championships at the All England Club by defeating Alexander Zverev, decided to skip the lead-up tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati to focus on recovery. In a statement released on Friday, the 25-year-old Italian confirmed his absence from the upcoming U.S. Open, citing the need for additional time to address his knee problem despite diligent efforts from his team and medical support. Expressing disappointment at missing the New York event, Sinner highlighted the special significance of the tournament to him and expressed eagerness to return to the vibrant atmosphere and loyal fans.

The reigning 2024 U.S. Open victor, Sinner, faced a setback after being defeated by Carlos Alcaraz in last year’s final. Meanwhile, Alcaraz, who has been sidelined with a right wrist injury since April, declared his readiness to compete in this year’s U.S. Open. The intense rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz has been a focal point in men’s tennis, with the pair meeting in the last three Grand Slam finals of 2025, culminating in Alcaraz’s triumph in New York. Sinner, boasting an impressive record of 44-3 and six titles this season, experienced a challenging outing at the French Open but bounced back to claim the Wimbledon title, bringing his tally to five Grand Slam victories.

This marks the first time that Sinner will miss a Grand Slam event since his debut at the U.S. Open in 2019.
