“The Assembly” Season 2: Celeb Interviews Redefine Connection

CBC’s reality series, The Assembly, is back for its second season featuring six new celebrity interviews and a larger cast of over 30 neurodivergent and autistic adults leading the discussions. Notable figures like actors Hudson Williams (Heated Rivalry), Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover), and Jay Baruchel (This is the End) are among the guests facing the spotlight.

The upcoming six-episode season will also showcase personalities such as actor and Miss Universe Canada Ashley Callingbull (North of North), musician Lights, and three-time Olympic hockey gold medalist Marie-Philip Poulin. Each celebrity will undergo an unrestricted interview process, delving into unanticipated and personal questions beyond the standard promotional dialogue.

The diverse group of interviewers in this season includes both familiar faces from the previous installment and fresh participants. This blend is pivotal to the series’ charm, providing a platform for genuine interactions, humor, and moments of connection. The show’s creators describe it as a space for both revelations and laughter, often within the same conversation.

The show’s format is inspired by the French show Les Rencontres du Papotin, which debuted in 2022 with guests like Killing Eve star Camille Cottin and French President Emmanuel Macron. The format has gained international popularity, with adaptations featuring renowned personalities such as actors Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, David Tennant, and Stephen Fry.

The first season of The Assembly received critical acclaim, winning a Canadian Screen Award for best direction, three Telly Awards, and a Golden Sheaf Award at the Yorkton Film Festival. It was also a nominee for a Banff Rockie Award. The show’s return for a second season signifies the audience’s positive response to its emphasis on genuine human connections and engaging conversations.

Executive producer Stephen Sawchuk promises the new season will uphold the show’s essence of heart, humor, and authentic dialogues, while fellow executive producer Sean De Vries believes the show’s focus on human connections resonates with viewers. Produced by Small Army Entertainment in Vancouver, Season 2 premieres on Sunday, November 1, at 9 p.m. ET on CBC TV and CBC Gem. Exclusive “producer’s cuts” will be available on CBC Gem starting at 9 a.m. ET on the same day.
