Balancing screen time and quality family time can be a challenging task on a daily basis. As children increasingly utilize their devices for various purposes like learning, staying connected, gaming, and streaming, determining an appropriate amount of screen time can become a blurred line.
To address this issue, The Family Chat campaign is being conducted throughout 2026 in collaboration with Tesco Mobile. Renowned author and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher is engaging with parents and children to discuss the challenges they encounter regarding screen time and online safety. Tesco Mobile offers valuable resources, including a downloadable family pledge, enabling families to establish healthy screen time habits and ensure their kids’ safety online.
Giovanna emphasizes the importance of regularly reviewing screen time rules within her own family, focusing on not allowing phone usage to become the primary activity, especially for younger children. She highlights the significance of encouraging diverse interests and activities beyond screen time.
The Karley family, comprising Anna, Emmanuel, and their three teenagers, relies on phones for communication, schoolwork, and managing their busy schedules. To tackle screen time concerns, the family participated in the Team Mum v Team Dad Online Safety Challenge, engaging in activities that highlighted the balance between screen and offscreen activities. Following the challenge, they committed to the Tesco Mobile family pledge, outlining guidelines for screen time, privacy, and sharing.
Anna and Emmanuel plan to utilize Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub to further support their family in maintaining a healthy digital-life balance. Implementing a phones-down rule at 9.30 pm, they aim to enhance family time by engaging in shared activities like quizzes. By adhering to the family pledge and utilizing expert advice, the Karley family seeks to foster a harmonious balance between their digital lives and real-world connections.
