U.S. President Donald Trump declared on Monday that Bombardier, a Montreal-based aircraft manufacturer, would be prohibited from selling its products in the United States unless it initiates production within the country.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “NO MORE SELLING BOMBARDIER IN THE UNITED STATES! Their products do not meet the required standards!” He emphasized that if Bombardier desires access to the U.S. market, it must establish manufacturing facilities within the nation and cease treating America as a mere financial resource.
This announcement from Trump, made amidst escalating trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa, reflects his ongoing efforts to push both foreign and domestic companies to increase their production activities within the U.S.
The White House has not yet responded to inquiries regarding how Trump plans to enforce the directive against Bombardier or the specific measures he intends to implement to prevent the delivery of Bombardier jets that have received approval from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Despite Trump’s stance, Bombardier highlighted in a late statement on Monday its existing operations in the U.S. and forthcoming expansion plans, emphasizing the significant job creation and economic contributions its aircraft manufacturing activities provide across the country.
Aerospace analyst Richard Aboulafia expressed skepticism about the feasibility of halting Bombardier jet sales, noting the intricate global supply chain dynamics within the aerospace industry and the substantial presence of Bombardier in the U.S., including its workforce and supplier network.
While Trump’s focus on Bombardier persists, industry experts anticipate potential repercussions on other Canadian companies as the trade dispute unfolds, underscoring the broader implications of such actions on both the U.S. economy and international trade relations.
