WhatsApp is on the verge of addressing one of its major concerns, prompting users to take action promptly to stay current. Currently, the primary method of communication on the platform involves sharing phone numbers, which may not always be convenient.
After a prolonged wait, the Meta-owned app is finally addressing this issue by introducing unique usernames. Once this feature is rolled out, users will have the option to share their usernames instead of phone numbers.
The rationale behind this change, as explained by WhatsApp, is that sharing a phone number can be a significant step when interacting with new acquaintances, whether they are classmates, neighbors, event contacts, or members of group chats.
The update will enhance the privacy of group conversations. For instance, individuals joining community chats or social groups will now be able to participate without immediately disclosing their phone numbers to strangers.
WhatsApp has confirmed that users can now start reserving their preferred usernames before the full launch. Given the platform’s massive user base, popular usernames may be quickly taken, so reserving early will increase the chances of securing the desired username and avoiding missing out.
To reserve a username, users must update WhatsApp to the latest version and navigate to:
Settings > Account > Username
The introduction of this feature will be gradual over the next few months, with WhatsApp alerting users when usernames become available in their respective regions.
